Michael McEvoy’s teaching is enmeshed with the precision and compassion of the Iyengar Yoga system while richly interwoven with the fluid intensity of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. A Chicago native, Michael studied and taught yoga at Chicago’s Moksha Yoga Center for a total of 9 years.
He has been deeply affected by the compassion and wisdom of the Buddha, Yoga figurehead Patanjali and the teachings of Advaita (non-duality).
Michael recognizes that while yoga is not asana (yoga postures), yoga asanas can explore the subtle truth of what yoga is, which can be seen as an introspective search for the truth of oneself and the eventual dissolution of all concepts and ideas pertaining to that search.
Michael has studied Hatha Yoga and eastern sciences with many different teachers. Most influential to him have been: Gabriel Halpern, Tias Little, Andrey Lappa and Richard Freeman.
Prior to leaving Chicago, Michael completed a two-year apprenticeship in Yoga Therapy with master Iyengar teacher Gabriel Halpern at the prestigious Yoga Circle. There he was deeply moved by the timeless teachings of: gratitude, compassion, patience and acceptance. Michael is grateful to all who have made Hatha Yoga accessible to the world, particularly Sri Tirumala Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois.
